WIS 33 Retaining Wall Replacement - Ozaukee County

work zone map

Project Overview

This proposed project will replace a retaining wall along the south side of WIS 33, next to the Cedarburg Bog State Natural Area, approximately 0.6 miles west of the County I roundabout, in Ozaukee County.

The wall is largely hidden from motorists' view and consist of gabions (rocks within wire baskets). The existing wall is in disrepair, which is contributing to the settlement of the roadway shoulder and guardrail.

Proposed Improvements

  • Clear trees and shrubs
  • Remove the existing retaining wall (gabions)
  • Install new retaining wall with concrete panels supported by steel posts
  • Reconstruct existing paved shoulder of WIS 33
  • Install curb and gutter with inlets
  • Replace culvert extension on the north side of WIS 33 and install a storm drain
  • Install new guardrail
The removal of trees and shrubs along the wall will also result in improved views of the adjacent Cedarburg Bog State Natural Area.

Proposed Traffic Impacts

A full closure of WIS 33 will be required to remove and replace the retaining wall. A detour will be posted utilizing County Y, WIS 60, and County I. The tree clearing operations will be performed under a shoulder closure.
