Location
The limits for the proposed project on US 8 run from County SS South to 480 feet east of County SS North in the Barron County village of Cameron.
Overview
This segment of US 8 is reaching the end of its service life. To address this and other issues, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is proposing:
- Reconstructing US 8 within the project limits with concrete pavement
- Replacing storm sewer
- Replacing curb, gutter and curb ramps
- Adding new sidewalk at certain locations
- Widening the US 8/County W/County SS intersection and replacing traffic signals
- Installing a two-way left-turn lane (TWLTL) from Sunnyside Avenue to the intersection with County W
- A TWLTL is a lane between opposing lanes of traffic for the purpose of allowing vehicles from either direction to make left turns.
In addition, the village plans to replace sanitary sewer and water main lines and services as part of the project, and the railroad plans to replace the crossing surface and signals at the railroad crossing north of the intersection of US 8/County W/County SS and add a 100-foot concrete median.
Schedule
Construction currently is scheduled for 2029.
Traffic Impacts
During construction, US 8 will be:
- Closed from County SS South to County W.
- East- and westbound through traffic on US 8 will be detoured via County W.
- North- and southbound through traffic between County SS South and County W will be detoured via County OO, US 53 and County O.
- Access to properties in the work zone will be maintained; however, there might be short periods where driveway access is disrupted.
- Temporary pedestrian facilities are proposed to be provided where existing sidewalks are impacted by work.
- Staged at the US 8/County W/County SS intersection to maintain traffic in the area as much as possible.
In addition, a short-term closure of County SS north of County W will be required to complete railroad crossing work.
