Location
The project on southbound US 53 extends from US 8 to the Chippewa County line, all in Barron County.
Overview
The pavement on this segment of southbound US 53 is showing signs of deterioration. To address this and other issues, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is proposing:
- Milling a portion of the existing asphalt pavement and placing new asphalt pavement
- Milling the pavement on the off- and on-ramps at the southbound US 53 interchanges at US 8 and County I
- Milling a portion of the existing pavement at Rest Area 33
This project will be constructed in conjunction with the following project: US 53 (County M (Main Street) Bridge) and US 53 (County W and railroad bridges).
Traffic Impacts
During construction, southbound US 53 will remain open to traffic, but motorists will encounter long-term single-lane closures to accommodate paving operations. In addition:
- During ramp closures at US 8 and County I, traffic will be detoured using the next upstream or downstream interchange.
- During work at Rest Area 33, the rest area will be closed for about seven calendar days to complete work on rest area parking lots and along the entrance and exit ramps.
Schedule
Construction currently is scheduled for 2027.
