Location
WIS 49, South Street to South Washington Street, Green Lake County
Project Overview
The existing WIS 49 pavement is deteriorating with cracking and rutting throughout. The pavement has met the end of its useful service life.
Proposed improvements include:
- Replace the existing concrete pavement with concrete pavement.
- An alternative of new asphalt pavement is viable and the city of Berlin will provide input on the preferred pavement alternative.
- Replace existing concrete curb and gutter on WIS 49 from 100 feet south of South Street to the Washington Street and Broadway Street intersection.
- Review intersection alternatives at the WIS 49/Spring Street and Washington Street and Broadway Street intersections to address truck turning movement issues.
- Upgrade existing curb ramps along WIS 49 in the city of Berlin to meet current ADA standards where possible.
- Install new pavement marking, including high-visibility crosswalks at high pedestrian traffic crossings.
- Traffic signal improvements including removing the existing signals at North Pearl Street, adding signals or all-way stop control at North Wisconsin Street, and replacement of the existing signals at the WIS 49 and Spring Street intersection.
- Evaluate curb bump-outs (curb extensions) at the intersections determined by the city to reduce crosswalk widths and improve visibility.
- Replace and/or adjustment of existing storm sewer where necessary.
- Narrow of WIS 49 from the Fox River Bridge to Washington Street to reduce excess roadway width and improve visibility.
Traffic Impacts
WIS 49 will be closed and detoured throughout construction. The detour route is anticipated to use WIS 21/WIS 73/WIS 23. WIS 49 will remain open to local and emergency traffic. Local staging requirements will be determined during the design process.
Real Estate
Additional right of way will be required for the project. The city of Berlin will acquire the real estate for the project. Any impacted property owners will be contacted directly during the design process.
