Public meeting set for WIS 27 project between Cadott, Cornell

Proposed work includes resurfacing roadway, replacing pedestrian underpass, adding centerline rumble strips, completing work on the Yellow River Bridge

Release date: October 30, 2024

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is holding a public involvement meeting to share details about improvements proposed for WIS 27 north of the WIS 29 interchange in Cadott to Johnson Road on the south side of Cornell, all in Chippewa County.

The public is encouraged to attend the meeting to learn more about the proposed improvements, ask questions of project staff and share their input.

  • When: 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13
    • A presentation is planned for 5 p.m.
  • Where: Cadott Elementary School cafeteria, 463 E. Mills St.

The existing pavement on WIS 27 is showing signs of deterioration. To address this and other issues, WisDOT is proposing to:

  • Remove two inches of the existing pavement and then overlay the road surface with two inches of new asphaltic pavement.
  • Widen the paved shoulders from three feet to six feet from 80th Avenue/North Road to 350 feet south of Johnson Road.
  • Add centerline rumble strips.
  • Replace the approaches and wing parapets on the west side of the Yellow River Bridge in Cadott.
  • Replace the pedestrian underpass in Cadott, along with curb, gutter and sidewalk at spot locations.
  • Extend the box culvert north of 135th Avenue in the town of Arthur and replace the structure's west wing wall.
  • Brush the ends, clean and repair culverts in the project limits.
  • Upgrade pedestrian curb ramps on sidewalks.
  • Replace guardrail.
  • Place new pavement markings.

During construction, motorists will encounter:

  • The closure of WIS 27 from County X to East Mills Street for the replacement of the pedestrian underpass. Traffic will be detoured using WIS 29 and WIS 178.
  • Lane closures controlled by temporary traffic signals during work on the Yellow River Bridge.
  • Lane or shoulder closures controlled by flagging for the remaining work.

During proposed sidewalk improvements, temporary pedestrian facilities will be provided, and during other work, there might be very short periods where driveway access is disrupted; the contractor will provide advanced notice of any access restrictions.

Construction is scheduled for 2027.
