Governor Evers approves bridge rehabilitation project on WIS 13

Work includes replacing expansion joints, concrete approach slabs, south railing

To invest in Wisconsin’s transportation system, Gov. Tony Evers has signed a $746,767 contract with prime contractor Zenith Tech, Inc. of Waukesha for the rehabilitation of the bridge carrying WIS 13 over the Sand River in northern Bayfield County between Cornucopia and Red Cliff. Construction is scheduled to start Monday, July 21.

Built in 1956, the bridge is showing signs of deterioration. To address this, the​ Wisconsin Department of Transportation is planning to:

  • Replace the expansion joints at each end of the bridge deck
  • Remove and replace the south edge of deck
  • Install stainless steel protective flashing and corrosion protection on the south edge of deck
  • Replace the concrete pavement approach slabs
  • Pave approximately 25 feet of asphalt pavement
  • Repair the concrete surface at the abutments
  • Replace the south railing
  • Salvage and clean existing rebar
  • Clean and paint the steel girder abutment bearings and the south exterior girder and paint the remaining girders at spot locations
  • Seal the bridge deck
  • Replace pavement markings

Construction is scheduled for completion in early October.
