Bridge construction to result in overnight closure of WIS 29

Setting of girders on new 50th Avenue structure to fully close highway for two nights

Release date: June 19, 2025

The setting of girders on a new bridge being constructed to carry 50th Avenue over WIS 29 east of Chippewa Falls will result in the full overnight closure of WIS 29 between County X and County J for two nights the week of June 23.

WIS 29 will be closed in both directions from 9 p.m. to 6 am. Currently, the work is planned to occur Monday and Tuesday nights; however, operations are weather dependent and could be pushed to Wednesday night. Traffic will be detoured via County J and County X.

Construction on the bridge replacement project began in March, and the project includes:

  • Removing and replacing the bridge
  • The project will increase the vertical clearance of the bridge over the highway
  • Building retaining walls along east- and westbound WIS 29 at the abutments
  • Replacing the roadway approach pavement and the pavement on the interchange ramps
  • Replacing culverts, guardrail and pavement markings

The bridge project is being constructed and coordinated at the same time as a single-lane roundabout is being built at the County J/50th Avenue intersection. The latter work is being sponsored by Chippewa County and the town of Lafayette.

Construction is scheduled for completion in early September.
