The Minnesota Department of Transportation, in cooperation with WisDOT, is planning to replace the Blatnik Bridge. During full closure of the bridge, additional traffic is expected to take Winter Street and Susquehanna Avenue. To prepare for that, WisDOT is proposing to:
- Remove a portion of existing pavement on Winter Street and Susquehanna Avenue and place a new layer of asphalt over the roadways
- Add a left-turn lane for northbound traffic at Susquehanna Avenue at the on-ramp to westbound US 2
- Add pavement markings to delineate additional turn lanes, as room allows, on the corridor
- Add temporary traffic signals on Winter Street at its intersections with Catlin and Grand avenues
- These signals will have interconnections to the railroad to eliminate the risk of a vehicle being stopped on the railroad tracks because of a red light at the signals.
- The signals will be removed following the completion of the Blatnik project.
- Constructing Americans With Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalk curb ramps along Winter Street where necessary
During construction, Winter Street and Susquehanna Avenue will remain open to traffic, but motorists will encounter lane closures controlled by flagging. Construction is scheduled for 2026.
For those who can’t attend the meeting, materials will be posted on the project
website.
Construction on the Blatnik Bridge project currently is scheduled to begin in late 2026, with full bridge closure coming in early 2027. That schedule is tentative. More information about the Blatnik Bridge replacement can be found on that project’s
website.
