Release date: June 10, 2025

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is seeking public comment on a proposed improvement project replacing six bridges on WIS 35 between the Chippewa River and east junction of WIS 25 in the Buffalo County town of Nelson.

The public is encouraged to visit the project website, review project details and use the comment form to share their input. In addition to general comments, please include any specific comments regarding potential work within the adjacent Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources' Tiffany Wildlife Area. Comments are being accepted through July 11 by:

             Attn.: Adam Hetrick

Built in 1933, the six structures are nearing the end of their service lives.  The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is proposing the following at each bridge:

  • Removing the existing bridge
  • Constructing a new bridge to modern standards
  • Evaluating the bridge length and the proposed pier placement to maintain waterway navigation and minimize conflicts with the existing bridge piers and abutments
  • Reconstructing the roadway approach pavement to match the new bridge deck
  • Replacing guardrail on the approaching roadway that are attached to the bridge
  • Restoring the pavement markings and signage through the bridge site

During construction, WIS 35 will remain open to traffic using a temporary roadway and bridge at each site. Local and emergency access will be maintained in the work zone. In addition, boat access will be maintained.

Temporary limited easements might be necessary for the project.

The project is anticipated to take at least two years to construct, with work currently scheduled to begin in 2030. If funding becomes available, work could start as early as 2029.
