Governor Evers approves WIS 70 resurfacing project

Emergency load restrictions between County GG and WIS 13 to be lifted June 9

Release date: June 8, 2026

To invest in Wisconsin’s transportation system, Gov. Tony Evers has signed a $5.5 million contract with prime contractor American Asphalt of Wisconsin of Mosinee for a resurfacing project on WIS 70 from County GG in the Sawyer County unincorporated community of Loretta east to Pixley Wilderness West Road in the Price County town of Lake west of Fifield. Construction is scheduled to start Monday, June 15

Project Details

To address deteriorating pavement, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation project is:

  • Removing a portion of the existing asphalt
  • Repaving the roadway with new asphalt pavement
  • Installing centerline rumble strips
  • Replacing or repairing guardrail as needed
  • Placing gravel along the shoulders
  • Replacing pavement markings

During construction, WIS 70 will remain open to traffic, but motorists will encounter single-lane closures controlled by flagging.

Construction is scheduled for completion on Aug. 7.

Emergency Load Restrictions

Because of the condition of the highway, WisDOT placed emergency load restrictions on WIS 70 between County GG and WIS 13 in late March until the road could be resurfaced.

The restrictions currently limit vehicles using this stretch of highway – with a few exceptions – to legal weights of 80,000 pounds, or 40 tons. The restrictions will be lifted at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, June 9 to allow construction crews to begin to mobilize for the resurfacing project.
