Traffic switch coming on westbound I-94 St. Croix River Bridge

Switch will result in overnight closure of ramps on westbound I-94 in WI and MN

The single lane of traffic on westbound I-94 over the St. Croix River Bridge connecting Hudson and Lakeland, Minn., is scheduled to be switched from the far right outside lane to the inside lane of the structure between 10 p.m. Wednesday, June 10 and 5 a.m. Thursday, June 11.

To ensure safety, all on- and off-ramps to westbound I-94 – the 14th Street slip ramp from Coulee Road (west of the Carmichael Road interchange at exit 2), the ramps at WIS 35 (exit 1) and ramps at MN 95 North (exit 258) – will be closed during the switch.

Construction on a project rehabilitating the east- and westbound I-94 bridges over the St. Croix River began in early April.

  • Construction on both bridges includes:
    • Replacing the modular and expansion joints
    • Placing a new polymer overlay on the bridge decks
    • Making concrete surface repairs
    • Cleaning of bridge bearings
    • Replacing pavement markings
  • Construction on the westbound bridge also includes:
    • Making repairs on the east and west abutment back walls
    • Completing spot painting of bridge pin and hanger system
  • Construction on the eastbound bridge also includes:
    • Repairing the east abutment back wall
    • Replacing the sidewalk railing
  • Construction on the retaining wall on the Wisconsin approach:
    • Replacing the block wall crossing under and adjacent to I-94 and parallel to the pedestrian path

Work currently is taking place on the westbound bridge. Once that is completed, crews will move to the eastbound structure. The entire project is scheduled for completion is late October.
