Governor Evers approves bridge rehabilitation project over US 2/53

Work includes replacing bridge joints, concrete approach slabs and approaching asphalt pavement and painting girders

Release date: June 1, 2026

To invest in Wisconsin’s transportation system, Gov. Tony Evers has signed a $1.43 million contract with prime contractor PCiRoads of Maple Grove, Minn., for a project rehabilitating the bridge carrying WIS 13 over US 2/53 southeast of the Douglas County city of Superior. Construction is scheduled to start Monday, June 8.

Built in 1968, the bridge needs maintenance. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation project is:

  • Replacing bridge joints
  • Making surface repairs to abutments
  • Cleaning and painting bridge girders and bearings
  • Replacing concrete approach slabs at each end of bridge
  • Replacing asphalt roadway approaches for about 100 feet
  • Replacing the guardrail bridge connections

During construction, US 2/53 will remain open to traffic, but motorists will encounter single-lane closures during painting. WIS 13 also will remain open to traffic, but motorists will encounter single-lane closures controlled by temporary traffic signals during structure work, approach slab replacement and asphalt paving.

Construction is scheduled for completion in late July.
