Work includes replacing concrete deck overlays, approach slabs on north- and southbound bridges over 22 ½ Avenue
Release date: May 8, 2025
To invest in Wisconsin’s transportation system, Gov. Tony Evers has signed a $770,405 contract with prime contractor Zenith Tech, Inc. of Waukesha for a project rehabilitating the north- and southbound US 53 bridges over 22 ½ Avenue in the Barron County town of Rice Lake. Construction is scheduled to start Wednesday, May 14; that start is weather dependent.
Built in 1976, the bridges need maintenance. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation project will:
- Replace the concrete deck overlays
- Replace the bridge approach slabs
- Repair bridge wing walls
- Repair cracks on girders and parapet as necessary
- Replace guardrail as necessary
During construction, US 53 in both directions will remain open to traffic, but motorists will encounter lane closures and a reduced speed limit.
The contractor plans to start work on the southbound bridge; once that is complete, crews will move to the northbound structure. Construction is expected to be completed in early August.
