Governor Evers approves US 8 resurfacing project in Polk County

Work includes reconstructing two segments of roadway, widening paved shoulders, installing rumble strips

Release date: May 5, 2026

To invest in Wisconsin’s transportation system, Gov. Tony Evers has signed a $7.52 million contract with prime contractor Monarch Paving Co. of Amery for a resurfacing project on US 8 from WIS 35 North east of St. Croix Falls to WIS 46 South in the town of Apple River, all in Polk County. Construction is scheduled to start Monday, May 11.

The pavement on this segment of WIS 35 is showing signs of deterioration. To address this and other issues, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation project is:

  • Milling 2.25 inches of existing asphaltic surface and placing 3.25 inches new asphalt
  • Reconstructing two locations of roadway where sloughing is occurring
  • Widening the paved shoulders from 3 to 5 feet
  • Installing centerline and shoulder rumble strips
  • Cleaning, extending, lining or replacing existing culverts and replacing deteriorating end walls on some structures
  • Replacing or adjusting guardrail
  • Completing roadside maintenance, including clearing and ditching

During construction, US 8 will remain open to traffic. Most work will be completed using single-lane closures controlled by flagging operations during normal construction hours. However, during repair of sloughing areas, temporary traffic signals will be used to control a single lane of traffic. Access to businesses and residences will be maintained at all times.

Construction is scheduled for completion in late August.
