Closure necessary to set girders on new bridge over County I
Release date: May 2, 2026
Southbound US 53 will be fully closed from 10 p.m. Monday, May 4 to 5 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, so crews can place girders on the new bridge being built over County I near Chetek.
During this closure, southbound US 53 traffic will be detoured via the off- and on-ramps at the County I interchange, and County I under the bridge will be closed.
Replacement of the bridge over County I is part of a multiyear project that started in 2025. Construction in 2026 also includes replacing the decks on bridges carrying southbound US 53 over 20th Street and the Chetek River.
On Wednesday, May 6, 20th Street will be closed under US 53 during the day because of construction on the southbound US 53 bridge above.
