Work also includes constructing a turn lane north of the bridge at Spruce Street
Release date: April 10, 2025
To invest in Wisconsin’s transportation system, Gov. Tony Evers has signed a $2.34 million contract with prime contractor Sheet Piling Services of Custer for a bridge replacement and safety improvement project on US 63 in the St. Croix County village of Baldwin. Construction is scheduled to start Monday, April 14.
Built in 1939, the bridge carrying US 63 over a branch of the Rush River has reached the end of its service life. In addition, southbound motorists on US 63 frequently encounter stopped vehicles waiting to turn left onto Spruce Street, resulting in a high frequency of rear-end crashes at the intersection. To address both, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is planning to:
- Replace the bridge
- Widen the east side of US 63 north of the bridge and shift the Spruce Street intersection to the east
- Convert the current northbound US 63 lane into a turn lane for southbound US 63 traffic to turn onto Spruce
- Construct a new northbound US 63 lane east of the new turn lane
- Replace the culvert under Spruce Street
- Replace pavement markings and signage
During construction, US 63 will remain open to traffic, but motorists will encounter lane closures controlled by flagging operations at times. In addition, they also will use a temporary bypass to get around the work zone for part of construction.
Construction is scheduled for completion in September. The start of the project is weather dependent.
