Release date: March 10, 2025

Construction on a multiyear improvement project on I-94 from just west of the US 53 interchange in the city of Eau Claire to Mallard Road in the Eau Claire County town of Clear Creek is set to resume Monday, March 17.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation project includes:

  • Removing and replacing the pavement on I-94 from Otter Creek to Mallard Road
  • Resurfacing the shoulders and completing concrete pavement repair on I-94 and collector roads from the western project limits to Otter Creek
  • Resurfacing the I-94/US 53 interchange, the approaching pavement on US 53 and the interchange ramps
  • Widening the eastbound I-94 bridge over Otter Creek
  • Removing and replacing the east- and westbound bridges over County D and County J
  • Removing and replacing a box culvert near County D
  • Repairing storm sewer
  • Placing new pavement markings.

Construction in 2024 included building temporary I-94 lanes for use during construction in 2025 and 2026; resurfacing the I-94/US 53 interchange, the approaching pavement on US 53 and the interchange ramps; and resurfacing the shoulders and completing concrete pavement repair on I-94 and collector roads from the western project limits to Otter Creek.

Construction in 2025 includes replacing the pavement of westbound I-94 from Otter Creek to Mallard Road, the westbound bridges over County J and County D and the box culvert carrying Kluckman Valley Creek under westbound I-94 near County D.

During construction, motorists on westbound I-94 will be shifted to the temporary lanes. County J tentatively is scheduled to be closed to traffic at I-94 beginning March 31. That closure is expected to be in place until July.

Construction in 2025 is scheduled for completion in mid-November. Work in 2026 will resume in spring 2026, with overall project completion that November.

Hoffman Construction Co. of Black River Falls is the prime contractors on the $69.97 million contract.
