Work in 2025 to include replacing northbound pavement south of County N, southbound pavement north of County N and ramps at two interchanges
Release date: March 3, 2025
Construction on the second year of a multiyear pavement replacement project on US 53 in Chippewa County from 40th Avenue in Lake Hallie to County B in Tilden is set to resume Monday, March 10.
This segment of US 53 has reached the end of its service life. To address this, construction in 2025 includes:
- Replacing the pavement on northbound US 53 and constructing temporary emergency pullouts south of County N
- Making repairs and completing polymer overlays on the northbound US 53 bridges over the Chippewa River and Business 29/County X
- Replacing the pavement on the on- and off-ramps at the County B and Business 29/County X interchanges
- Replacing the pavement on southbound US 53 north of County N, including the north- and southbound passing lanes north of County B
- Milling and overlaying the shoulder between County B and County Q along the driving lane of southbound US 53
- Replacing guardrail
- Completing culvert work
- Installing new pavement markings and shoulder rumble strips
During construction in 2025, US 53 will remain open to traffic, but motorists will encounter lane and interchange ramp closures. When construction resumes, northbound US 53 traffic will be shifted to the southbound lanes south of County N, with one lane operating in each direction.
The ramp from northbound US 53 to Business 29/County X and ramp from Business 29/County X to northbound US 53 are expected to close to traffic Monday or Tuesday, March 10 or 11.
Construction on the $36.6 million project began in April 2024, and work in 2025 is expected to be completed in late October. Following a winter shutdown, work will resume in early 2026, with completion in late June. James Peterson Sons, Inc. of Medford is the prime contractor.
