WIS 54, Maple Drive to I-39, Portage County

Location

WIS 54, Maple Drive to I-39, Portage County

Overview

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is in the process of developing plans for a pavement replacement project on WIS 54 between Maple Drive and I-39 in Portage County. This section of WIS 54 is approximately 1.5 miles in length. The existing pavement structure consists of asphalt overlaid with concrete. This atypical kind of overlay, concrete over asphalt, has resulted in an increased deterioration in the pavement, such as longitudinal and transverse cracking, spalling and shifting between slabs. The purpose of the project is to repair the deteriorating pavement. Proposed improvements include removing the concrete overlay on WIS 54, removing the asphalt underneath the concrete and adding 2 inches of base aggregate to the existing base layer. New asphalt will then be placed on top of the base layer. The roadway profile will be lowered by 2.75" through the pavement replacement. The project will also include replacement of select culverts, minor rehabilitation to a structure in the project limits, widening of the Hoover Avenue intersection, replacement of guardrail, pavement marking and centerline rumble strips.

Traffic Impacts

The pavement replacement will require the roadway be closed to through traffic during construction. A detour route will be provided and indicated through traffic signs. The anticipated detour route will be County B and I-39. Access to local traffic will be maintained during construction. The driving surface for local traffic will be gravel at times during construction. Due to culvert work, there may be short periods of time where the road is closed completely. The anticipated detour route will be County B and I-39.
