WIS 96 Fox River Bridge and Approaches Corridor Study, Brown County

Importance | Study update | Alternatives | What's next

The WIS 96 Fox River Bridge and Approaches Corridor Study is being conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT). The goal of the study is to recommend a preferred crossing location that meets the existing and future needs for the village of Wrightstown and surrounding communities. The study is scheduled to be completed with a recommendation in summer/fall 2010. Construction is tentatively planned to begin in 2014.

Local and regional importance

The nearest Fox River crossings are in De Pere (10 miles north) and Kaukauna (six and one half miles south). The WIS 96 bridge not only provides an essential connection for the village of Wrightstown and surrounding communities, but also provides a critical connection to employers, heath care providers and recreational and retail opportunities in other parts of the Fox Valley.

Study update

On June 11, 2009 WisDOT held the project’s third public information meeting to allow the public to view and comment on the six remaining alternative alignments and the process used to arrive at these alternatives.

Following the June 2009 public meeting, WisDOT further screened the remaining six alternatives to two alternatives based on comments received from the public and local, state, and federal organizations and agencies.

In an effort to select a preferred alternative, WisDOT held a series of meetings with local organizations, county organizations and the public, including:

  • Wrightstown Village Board (November 10, 2009)
  • Sixth Project Advisory Committee Meeting (PAC) (December 8, 2009)

At the above meetings, WisDOT presented the two remaining alternatives, explained the impacts and characteristics of each, and gathered comments and information on each alternative.

Alternatives remaining

As presented at the above series of meetings, there are two alternative alignments remaining for consideration:

  • Alternative 1 - crosses the Fox River south of the existing bridge and connects with Main Street at the existing Broadway Street intersection on the west side of the river.
  • Alternative 5 - crosses the Fox River north of the existing bridge and connects with Main Street near the existing Bridge Street intersection on the west side of the river.

Both of the alternatives involve a grade separation (bridge) at the WIS 96 crossing with Washington Street. Both alternatives would improve the Fair St./High St./Turner St. intersection on the east side of the river.

Currently, WisDOT is evaluating variations to Alternatives 1 and 5 in order to obtain an alignment that best meets the purpose and need of the study and addresses community concerns.

Please see the Maps page and the Public involvement page for maps, displays, and additional information on the remaining alternatives.

What’s next?

A public information meeting (PIM) will be held in spring 2010 where WisDOT will present the remaining variations of Alternatives 1 and 5 and obtain feedback from the public.

WisDOT plans to announce a preferred alternative by summer/fall 2010. Among other things, this will require evaluation of the information gathered at public information meeting, environmental documentation, agency coordination, and further engineering analysis.
