US 2/WIS 13 Intersection Improvement

Status/phase

Design work with no construction activity planned until 2012.

Project overview

The US 2/WIS 13 project is 3.2 miles long and is located in Bayfield County.

US 2 is a 2020 Connector Route on the Wisconsin State Highway System and serves as a major east/west route.

WIS 13 is on the National Highway System (NHS) and serves as a major north-south route through the area.

This intersection has been modified several times over the last 35 years. Injury and fatality crash rates are high.

The project for this intersection, mainly used by motorists traveling between the Washburn/Bayfield area and the City of Ashland, will provide a safer and more efficient roadway. Either new signals or a roundabout is anticipated to reduce the crash rates.

Estimated construction costs are $1.9 million for the roundabout option.

Project update (January 24, 2012)

The US 2/WIS 13 intersection improvement roundabout project contract was awarded to Chippewa Concrete Services in December 2011 and construction is expected to start in April 2012.

Several pavement repair areas were omitted in the new design to reduce project cost and complexity, however the roundabout is virtually unchanged from the original design.

During construction, US 2 traffic will be reduced to two lanes with two-way traffic. The intersection will be controlled by temporary traffic signals.
