Project overview

WIS 65 is an arterial highway route serving St. Croix County and serves a high number of residents that commute to and from employment in the Twin Cities Metropolitan area.

Beginning in spring of 2012, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is planning several improvement projects on WIS 65 and I-94 in St. Croix County.

The first project is the reconstruction of the WIS 65 interchange and a two mile segment of I-94.

This project addresses the deteriorating structural condition of the WIS 65 bridge over I-94.

  • The bridge is at the end of its lifespan and is in need of replacement.
  • Due to the large increase in vehicle traffic using the WIS 65 interchange, the ramps will also be reconstructed along with the new structure to better handle the increased traffic volumes.
  • I-94 will also be reconstructed in the area of the interchange to expand the median to meet the new standard of 60 feet.
  • Grading will also occur to construct the subgrade to support a 3rd lane in each direction to handle traffic in the future when volumes warrant adding a lane.
  • Lastly, the hill on I-94 just west of the WIS 65 interchange will be lowered to meet current standards and will provide a safer roadway.

The second project consists of a series of four smaller projects (intersections):

  • WIS 65/County G
  • WIS 65/US 12/120th Street
  • WIS 65/US 12/130th Street
  • WIS 65/County TT

These intersections experienced an elevated crash rate and each were analyzed for safety improvements.

The conclusion of the safety study was to reconstruct each intersection as a modern roundabout. The construction of modern roundabouts at each location will improve safety and improve capacity of the intersection to handle future traffic volume increases and decrease travel time and travel delay at each intersection.

Construction on all of the projects is estimated to begin in the spring of 2012. The roundabouts should be completed by November of 2012. The interchange reconstruction should be complete by early summer of 2013.

Project cost is estimated at $8 million.
