Amateur radio license plate

Amateur radio license plates allow for the amateur radio station call letters to be displayed on license plates in lieu of regular plate numbers.

Eligibility​

Amateur radio license plates are available to any Wisconsin motorist who holds a valid amateur radio station license issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The applicant must be an owner or lessee of the vehicle.

​Vehicles that qualify

  • automobiles 
  • motor homes (annual registration only) 
  • motor trucks
    • 4,500, 6,000 or 8,000 pounds gross weight including dual purpose farm and dual purpose motor home 
    • 12,000 pounds gross weight farm truck 

Things you should know:

  • A $15 issuance fee is required when Amateur radio plates are issued. 
  • Amateur radio plates cannot be personalized, other than the FCC call letters.
  • Eligible persons may register more than one vehicle with Amateur radio plates.

How to apply:

Amateur radio plates are not available or processed at DMV customer service centers. All applications must be mailed to the address below.

  1. If the vehicle you want to register with Amateur Radio plates is already titled in your name, send:
    • A copy of your FCC license
    • A completed MV2324 Amateur Radio License Plate Information and Application
    • $15 issuance fe
    • The annual registration fee if you do not have plates or if your current plates expire within the next three months
  2. If the vehicle is not titled in your name, send:
    • A completed Wisconsin Title & License Plates ApplicationMV1, or MV11 for dealer sales, including all other fees due
    • A completed MV2324 Amateur Radio License Plate Information and Application
    • A copy of your FCC license
    • A written request for Amateur radio plates
    • $15 issuance fee
    • The Certificate of Title assigned to you 
    • The annual registration fee if you do not have plates or your current plates expire within the next three months​
  3. Send check or money order made payable to Registration Fee Trust.
