GDL saves lives

The graduated driver license (GDL) saves young lives and makes Wisconsin's roads safer

Teen drivers are more likely to be in a motor vehicle crash than any other age group.

  • For two out of every three teen drivers killed in a crash, it's their first and last crash.
  • Teen drivers experience more crashes involving driving errors such as inattentive driving and driving too fast.

GDL is proven to reduce teen driver crashes.

  • GDL reduces high-risk driving situations for new teen drivers.
  • Teens gain needed driving experience under lower-risk conditions (such as during the day, and without peer passengers).
  • Novice drivers get more supervised driving experience.

Parents and teens can help make GDL work more effectively by learning and following Wisconsin's GDL requirements and restrictions. PDF It's the law.

Testimony in the following two letters comes from parents who worked with legislators, organizations and other people to help pass GDL legislation in 2000. We thank all of them for their important work.
