Project need

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Northeast Region is proposing to improve four miles of WIS 44. • Replacing three cross-drain culverts
  • Extending one culvert
  • Improving the curb ramps to bring them into compliance with the requirements of the Americans With Disabilities Act.

Project construction schedule

*NEW DATE** Project construction begins summer of 2023.

  • Due to available funding and deteriorating conditions on the roadway, this project has been advanced to the 2023 construction year. It was originally scheduled for 2025 construction season.

Traffic impacts

  • Proposed culvert work near County E is scheduled to be conducted with a highway closure and detour.
    • Detour: Traffic will be directed to take County E north to County KK to WIS 44 south.
    • View detour map
  • During milling and paving operations, WIS 44 will remain open to traffic under flagging.
  • Access for emergency vehicles, businesses, and residents will be maintained throughout the project.
  • Temporary driveway closures may be necessary during parts of the construction process. The contractor will contact homeowners and businesses in advance before closing a driveway.

Real estate impacts

Small areas of right of way will be required for this project in order to replace and extend culverts and ensure new curb ramps are able to meet the slopes required by the Americans With Disabilities Act. Preliminary right-of-way needs are shown on the map below.

Project update/next steps
